The road to become Siemens Gamesa

The path leading to the designation of Siemens Gamesa has been extensive, marked by numerous acquisitions and mergers. Commencing with Bonus Energy in 2004, the journey culminated in the latest merger with Gamesa in 2017. Further details on this historical progression can be found below:

Bonus Energy was founded in 1980 in Denmark. In its early years, the company focused on designing and manufacturing wind turbines for onshore and offshore applications. Bonus Energy was known for its innovative approach to wind turbine design. The company developed and implemented various technological advancements to improve the efficiency and reliability of its turbines.

In 2004, Siemens, a German multinational conglomerate, acquired Bonus Energy. This acquisition was part of Siemens’ strategy to expand its presence in the renewable energy sector, particularly in wind power.

During the early 1980s, Siemens embarked on its journey in the wind industry, focusing initially on small-scale installations and experimental wind turbine projects. ‘

Throughout the 2000s, Siemens Wind Power experienced significant growth, with a focus on both onshore and offshore wind turbines. The acquisition of Bonus Energy in 2004 made it possible for Siemens to enhance its wind turbines’ efficiency, reliability, and performance. Incorporating Bonus Energy’s expertise contributed to Siemens’ ability to offer cutting-edge solutions in the evolving wind energy landscape.

Siemens Wind Power emerged as a major global player, establishing itself as a dependable supplier of turbines for large-scale wind farms and projects worldwide.

Gamesa was founded in 1976 in Spain as a technology company focused on wind energy and the mechanical industry. During the 1980s and 1990s, Gamesa experienced significant growth and began developing and manufacturing more advanced wind turbines.

Throughout the 2000s, Gamesa expanded its global presence by establishing production facilities and research centers in various parts of the world. They became known as one of the leading players in the wind energy industry, particularly active in the European and Latin American markets.

In 2017, Siemens announced the merger of their turbine division with the Spanish turbine manufacturer Gamesa. This merger resulted in the creation of a new company, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

The merger aimed to capitalize on the complementary strengths of the two companies, enhance competitiveness, and create a more comprehensive and diversified product portfolio.

Siemens Gamesa is today a major player in the offshore wind energy sector. The company’s offshore wind turbines are designed to meet the specific challenges of marine environments, contributing to the growth of offshore wind projects globally.

Online training

What: This is an introductory level class designed to provide a firm understanding of generic wind turbine systems and sub-systems to component level, including an introduction to technical documentation such as electrical schematic diagrams and hydraulic diagrams. It is delivered over 5 days with both individual and group interactive exercises with a formal assessment at the end of the class.

Who should attend: Technicians new to the wind industry or those transitioning from other sectors or any resources who have a requirements to understand the fundamental technical aspects of wind turbine technology

Delivery Options: This class can be delivered either in-person or via the distance learning online method

What: This is an advanced wind turbine type-specific theory class designed to provide a deep awareness of all turbine systems and sub-systems and provides a solid foundation to support core maintenance activities and the development towards advanced troubleshooting technician status. The class is an intensive theory based class delivered over 5 days with many individual and group exercises built in to ensure that participants emerge with a deep understanding of the technology and associated systems that they are required to support.
Actual performance and fault data is used to provide real life examples and each class is tailored to participant group and any specific aspects associated with their company to enhance the learning experience.

Who Should Attend: Existing Technicians or experienced technical support staff with a requirement to fully understand the key turbine systems and sub-systems and modes of failure

Delivery Options: this course can be delivered in-person or via the online Distance Learning method

What: This turbine-specific course is designed to ensure that participants understand not only WHAT scheduled (preventative) maintenance tasks to undertake but WHY they need to be undertaken. It is recommended that this course is undertaken after the Wind Turbine Theory (Advanced) course to ensure sufficient underpinning knowledge

Who should attend: Technicians engaged in the delivery of scheduled (preventative) maintenance activities and any other resources involvement in the supervision of maintenance activities or the technical support of maintenance activities

Delivery Options: This course is delivered in-person within a wind turbine type that your participants will be maintaining

What: This class builds on the turbine specific theory delivered during the Wind Turbine Theory class and is focused on developing a deep understanding of Troubleshooting methodologies and allowing the participants to develop sustainable techniques to support troubleshooting in all scenarios.

Who Should attend: Technicians who will be involved in Advanced troubleshooting activities and any off-site technical support resources directly involved in providing technical support for field-based technicians

Delivery Options: This course is delivered in-person within the specific turbine type that your troubleshooting activity will be carried out on

What: This class is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of preventative maintenance activities, and to allow your staff to assess the quality of preventative maintenance being undertaken on your assets. This class focusses on providing a deep understanding of ‘Why’ each preventative maintenance activity is undertaken, and the implications of these activities not being undertaken to the correct level of quality

Who should attend: Any resources involved in the management or supervision of wind turbine maintenance activities. Off-site technical support resources would also benefit from attending this class to gain a firm understanding of the importance of field-based preventative maintenance

Delivery Method: This class is delivered in-person via a combination of classroom theory and in-turbine practical methods

What: This class is designed to provide participants with the competence to undertake an Asset Integrity Inspection based on a turbine type-specific integrity checklist produced by DWPA. These inspections typically take place prior to the end of an initial Warranty period but should be undertaken at defined intervals throughout the lifetime of a turbine and prior to any fundamental changes in the maintenance delivery model.

Who should attend: Operational and asset management staff with responsibility for long term asset management decision and any staff who will be receiving and reviewing ‘end of warranty’ or general ‘asset integrity’ inspection outputs.

Delivery Method: this class is delivered in-person within the specific turbine type that you require inspections to be undertaken on

What: This is a tailored class to support the development of the specific competencies required to undertake defined operation and maintenance activities. This class has been developed within the UK market and is designed to provide resource flexibility without compromising Health & Safety by focusing on the competence needed to perform specific pre-defined tasks within the turbine safely. (*Note – this class is designed to support Wind Turbine Safety Rule ‘Limited’ authorisations)

Who should attend: Technicians or off-site support resources who are required to undertake specific/defined duties ie. Blade Repair Technicians, Gearbox Inspectors, Insurance Inspectors or wind turbine owner/operator staff who are required to conduct general turbine inspects independently

Delivery Method: In-person via a combination of classroom and in-turbine delivery

What: This class covers the fundamental design and operational aspects associated with wind turbine Gearboxes. It also allows for a deep dive into gearbox maintenance considerations (including common failure modes) and includes detailed instruction on how to conduct wind turbine gearbox inspections


Who Should Attend: Anyone directly involved in conducting Wind Turbine gearbox inspections, or anyone responsible for analysing gearbox inspection reports and making gearbox related asset management decisions


Method of Delivery: In person at a specifically designed facility to support direct practical experience of inspecting wind turbine gearboxes

What: a class designed specifically to provide a generic overview and awareness of wind turbine technology and the functionality associated wind turbine systems and sub-systems, specifically those systems associated with (and affected by) remote operation and control.
*Note – this class can be developed into a workshop for organisations who have not yet developed their remote operations strategy, or who are at an early stage of development, with a focus on current remote operations best practice

Who should attend: anyone involved in directly in remote operations activities

Method of Delivery: this class can be delivered in-person or via the remote Distance Learning model

What: A comprehensive overview of current Operation & Maintenance best practice, encompassing all elements which affect the safe and efficient operation of wind turbine assets.

Who Should Attend: Anyone who is directly involved with the delivery of windfarm operation and maintenance or who supports the activities of those directly involved in windfarm operation and maintenance

Delivery Method: In-person or Distance Learning
